The Atelier Smedsby workshop is a one-year distance learning class incorporating three individual/group meetings in Paris.

In between meetings in Paris, the participants will report monthly on the progress of their works via Skype.

During these monthly reports, they will be able to ask questions, demonstrate the evolution of their work, receive evaluation and feedback and thus move forward in the accomplishment of their personal projects.

These monthly reports are the base of the workshop and we expect them to be well prepared by the participants. Of course the participants will have the possibility to communicate with Atelier Smedsby also between these monthly reports as well.

Atelier Smedsby work with an educational platform as a base for the participant’s work and development. The platform is a fantastic tool that we use for the individual Skype meetings every month. Here the participants can also communicate and exchange information with each other.We also have a Facebook page where we make suggestions about exhibitions, books and films etc...

Objectivs

Identify each participant's visual language and define their photographic approach.
Encourage participants to realize both personal and assigned projects.
Follow the evolution of a photography project.
Help to develop, realize, and finalize each participant's project.
Learn to critique the work of others, and one's own, at both theoretical and practical levels.
Find methods for editing the participant´s work for either books or exhibitions.
Give advices and discuss how to present your work to school applications, publishers, prices, etc...
Discover photography culture.
Our most important objective is to increase the artistic independence for each and every participant.

Practical informations

1st meeting (start of workshop) 14&15 October 2023

Presentation of workshop and organizers. Group introduction of each participant, presenting and defining each person's work. Individual meetings the next day to set up the photography project to be carried out during the year.

2nd meeting (date to define with the group) : Group presentation of work accomplished since the first meeting. Critique and direction for the continuation of the projects.

3rd meeting (date to define with the group) : Finalization and realization of works created during the year. Proposal for the continuation of certain projects.

More detailed schedule will be given once the workshop starts.

Every day we offer you a french breakfast, lunch with drinks and the first evening we offer you a dinner at a restaurant carrefully chosen by us.

How to apply/prices

PARTICIPANTS : 12 participants maximum

- Any professional or enthusiast using photography as a means of artistic expression.
- Creative art students looking for a different and complimentary input to their studies.
- Professionals wishing to widen their horizons.
- Enthusiasts wanting to consolidate their photography skills.

PRICE : 3900 Euros

This price does not include production, travel, or accommodation for the meetings. A 50% deposit by bank transfer is required once you have been accepted to the Atelier Smedsby workshop, and the remaining 50% one week before the start of the workshop.

TECHNICAL DETAILS :

Classes will be held in English and French.

All participants need to provide their own equipment.

Internet access will be provided at the rue du Faubourg St Martin workshop where meetings will be held. It will also be possible to use a scanner, printer and video projector.

Will you help us to find accommodation?

After confirmation of your enrolment in the workshop, a list of hotels for different budgets located in the vicinity of the workshop will be provided.

What kind of material should I bring to the workshop?

For the One Year Workshop :

The photographs are taken outside the Paris meetings. You only need to bring your work in print or digital form to the workshop. We provide computers, projectors and scanners that can be used to present your work.

For the 5 days workshops in Paris (France) and Smedsby (Sweden):

You have to bring the caneras you use for your works.

Can I pay in several instalments?

We no longer accept payment in multiple instalments. A deposit of 50% of the course fee should be paid by bank transfer once your participation in the Atelier Smedsby has been confirmed. The balance should be paid one week after the start of the workshop.

Do you provides meals?

For the One Year Workshop :

We provide breakfast and lunch each day of the workshop as well as a welcome diner on the evening of your arrival.

For the 5 days workshop in Paris :

We provide breakfast and drinks during the day. Lunch and diner will ba taken outside and are not part of the price of the workshop.

For the 5 days workshop in Smedsby :

We provide breakfast, lunch and diner during all the workshop.
